Microsoft today announced that the new name for the next version of Windows is Windows 10 and it is coming late 2015. However, those interested can sign up for the preview program here. They also confirmed that the next version of Windows Phone will be Windows 10 and it will be the much awaited “One Windows” ecosystem that Microsoft has been chasing for some time now. The convergence means that Windows 10 will now run on devices of all shapes and sizes. We will definitely be playing with Windows 10 as soon as we get our hands on it.

In short, Windows 10 will feature the following.

  • Return of the start menu, which incorporates “metro” tiles in it.
  • “Metro” apps now run in traditional, desktop style windows.
  • Support for multiple desktop workspaces and window snapping enhancements.
  • New taskbar buttons for searching (with enhanced search) and also for task switching.

Cortana, the voice-based assistant from Windows Phone is also rumoured to be coming to Windows 10, along with a notfication centre.
